Places We Recommend To Visit
-
Griffith Park & Observatory
One of our early dates were here, beautiful views of the city and some nice hiking trails towards the Hollywood sign and wisdom tree. Depending on the interest you are close to the Hollywood walk of fame for the ultimate tourist bucketlist check or go shopping/enjoy a bite at the Americana in Glendale (Brand Grill not too far). Interested in trying Ponchik, check out Papillion Bakery off Central.
-
The Huntington Library
A Pasadena gem, beautiful gardens and great place for photos! The Library has Gutenberg Bible and the Ellesmere manuscript of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and many books through 1640s! If you’re a history love like Matt you’ll enjoy this place.
-
The Getty Museum
The Getty museum and the Villa (it’s sister location in Malibu) are Ash’s favorite places to see some great historical art works. After one of our early dates here, we spontaneously drove overnight to San Francisco, little did we know it’d be our new chapter.
-
Plazita Olvera
A cultural and historcial gem in downtown LA. Ash brought Matt to a Dia de Los Muertos event and highly recommends getting a bite at El Rancho Grande. By the way, this place was considered the "birthplace of Los Angeles" and was established by early settlers in 1781!
-
The Last Bookstore
A fun bookstore in the heart of Downtown LA, it’s in a 22,000-square-foot former bank and features art installations like a "book tunnel," over 500,000 books and records, a record store, a comic book shop, and is often described as a labyrinth. While visiting we recommend checking out Pershing Square, Grand Central Market and the Broad Contemporary Art Museum.
-
Dodger Stadium
Home of Matt’s favorite team and player Shohei Ohtani. Check out their stadium tours while you’re there. By the way Chinatown is super close, try combining these two and stop by Yang Chow OR Foo Chow (the restaurant featured in one of our favorite movies Rush Hour).
-
LACMA Lights
Another favorite of our early dates nights. Grab an ice cream at Wanderlust Creamery or at Holy Roly and enjoy the art installation. Fun fact: the Urban Light is made up of 202 restored street lamps from 1920s and 1930s, which were originally used across SoCal.
-
Little Tokyo
We love Little Tokyo! Lots to see and do. While here check out our favorite mochi store Fugetsu-Do, it’s the oldest family-owned Japanese-American business in the country, operating since 1903! Matt’s favorite is the peanut butter mochi.
-
El Mercadito
Enjoy some delicious Mexican food and beautiful artisanal finds here. While in the area try seeing Plaza Mariachi, it has been a gathering spot for mariachi musicians since at least the 1930s, evolving from an unofficial hiring hall into a formal plaza. And if up to a walk, check out the original 1929 1st Street Bridge (off same street as Plaza Mariachi) it’s famous for being a frequent filming location, providing great city views for car commercials and movies.
-
Santa Monica Pier
Iconic to LA, we enjoy taking a stroll both on the pier and along the beach. Just note try not to go swimming here, we can recommend better beaches for that. A few blocks from the pier you can visit 3rd Street Promenade, on Friday and Saturday nights they have free live music and salsa dances.
-
Venice Canal Historic District
Fun place to walk along the beach board walk. Muscle beach also pretty close. If you can try catching a drink and some tapas at the Redline Venice hotel, it has beautiful beach views.
-
Playa Del Rey
Looking for an easy, not too crowded stroll along the beach on your last day before flying back? Ash loved going on afternoon walks after work here. Park the car in El Segundo beach and walk along to Playa Del Rey and along the Creek. Depending on the season, the walk along the creek has beautiful yellow flowers and lots of UCLA rowing teams.
